What is Crash BASIC?

Crash BASIC is my vision of what the next evolution of BASIC could be.

It combines the rapid iteration and approachability that made BASIC so beloved with a modern, Rust-powered 2D game engine built for creating real games—not just learning to program.

More importantly, Crash BASIC is built around a simple philosophy:

The developer should always remain the author.

I believe AI has an important place in software development, but that place isn't replacing the creative process. Instead, Crash BASIC uses technology to remove friction, accelerate workflows, and make creating games more enjoyable, while keeping every creative decision in your hands.

Under the hood is a powerful engine written in Rust with native support for Windows, macOS, Linux, WebAssembly, iOS, and Android. The language and engine evolve together as a single creative platform, designed to grow without sacrificing the simplicity that made BASIC special in the first place.

I also wanted the business model to be as straightforward as the language itself.

There are no royalties. No revenue sharing. No per-game fees. No third-party runtime licenses. And once you've stamped a game for release, it never phones home or requires online activation.

If you're creating games as a hobby, learning to program, or just sharing projects with friends, Crash BASIC is free forever.

When you're ready to publish commercially, an annual license lets you stamp and release your games on every platform Crash BASIC supports. As long as your license is active, you can continue updating existing games and publish new ones.

If you decide not to renew, that's okay too. Your previously stamped games remain yours to distribute. They don't stop working, require activation, or suddenly become invalid—you simply lose the ability to create new commercial releases or publish updates until you renew.

Crash BASIC isn't trying to write games for you.

It's trying to make writing games joyful again.
