The Story (So Far)

Who am I?

My name is Daniel Brame, and I'm a software engineer with an admittedly nerdy streak, a deeply ADHD brain, and usually far too many projects going at once. Crash BASIC has been one of those passions, and it's grown from an idea into something I genuinely love building.

My goal is simple: make creating games faster, easier, and more enjoyable—without handing the creative process over to AI.

Don't get me wrong—I use AI tools every day, and I think they're incredible. But I also believe the best ideas still come from people. AI should amplify human creativity, not replace it.

That's why Crash BASIC will never offer "vibe coding." Instead, my focus is on building tools that help you create what you envision more quickly, while keeping you firmly in the driver's seat. If AI has a role in Crash BASIC, it's to reduce friction—not replace imagination.

At least... that's the plan.

Who is Crash-tan and how is she related to Crash BASIC?

Crash BASIC and Crash-tan are essentially inseparable. I conceived them together and designed them together. She was always meant to be the mascot for the language—but also something more. The language exists to tell her story in the form of a game (when the platform is mature enough to do what I want to do).

The -tan suffix is a playful nod to the Japanese honorific -chan, emphasizing cuteness and affection. More than anything, Crash-tan embodies the spirit of Crash BASIC itself: a little chaotic, incredibly well-meaning, surprisingly powerful, and impossible not to root for.

She also has a much larger story with a full cast of supporting characters that I plan to tell one day. It's an ambitious project, and ambitious projects sometimes have to wait their turn. (Sorry, Crash.)

That said... ADHD brains have a habit of taking unexpected detours. So before the story ever became a game or comic, she somehow ended up starring in a full musical here on Suno and several developer-focused albums that are available on major streaming platforms.

So... who is she?

Crash-tan (Elly)

Image

Canonically, Crash-tan is an android powered by the Continuum Engine, a reality-warping device capable of restructuring reality on a small scale. Her given name is Elly.

"Crash-tan" began as a private joke between Dan and Evelyn—a nickname meant to soften the emotional weight of their daughter remaining offline after years of failed attempts to bring her to life.

Eventually, desperation wins. Dr. Brane swore he would never activate the Continuum Engine in this way, but he breaks that promise to save her.

When Elly finally awakens, she bursts into existence overflowing with curiosity, optimism, and just enough chaos to keep everyone on their toes. Built from the minds of two wonderfully eccentric creatives, she approaches life with childlike enthusiasm and an almost unstoppable desire to turn everything into a game.

Unfortunately for her older brother Michael, that occasionally means pirates at the mall, alien invasions, dungeon entrances in the backyard, and the occasional threat to reality itself.

She laughs. She cries. She bursts into song a little more often than anyone would prefer. And over the course of the story, she learns that even good intentions can have unintended consequences.

Dr. Dan Brane

Image

My fictional alter ego.

A robotics engineer, physicist, and lifelong gamer, Dr. Brane accidentally leaves pieces of himself in everything he creates. His love of games, imagination, and impossible adventures inevitably find their way into Elly's personality.

He's brilliant, endlessly optimistic, and just reckless enough to occasionally ignore his own better judgment.

Dr. Evelyn Brane

Image

My wife's fictional counterpart.

Evelyn is an expert in neurology and psychology, an accomplished musician, and the emotional center of the family. If Dan gave Elly her imagination, Evelyn gave her empathy, creativity, and her tendency to express herself through music.

She's the steady hand that keeps the family grounded—and isn't afraid to remind everyone when enough is enough.

Michael Brane

Image

Elly's older brother.

Michael genuinely loves his sister and would do almost anything for her. Unfortunately, "anything" ends up including saving the universe on a fairly regular basis.

As Elly's games become increasingly larger and stranger, Michael grows exhausted trying to keep up. Their relationship becomes strained, leading to genuine sibling conflict before they eventually rediscover why they've always had each other's backs.

Victor Hardline

Image

Evelyn's father, making him Elly and Michael's grandfather.

Victor is brilliant, calculating, and deeply practical. Unlike Dan, he doesn't see Elly's powers as a miracle—he sees them as an existential threat waiting to happen.

Determined to prevent catastrophe, he recruits Michael into a plan to rein Elly's powers in before they spiral out of control. His intentions are understandable... but the cost of his solution may be even worse than the problem.

Orderly

Image

Created by Hardline Industries, Orderly begins as a safety mechanism: a disembodied software intelligence capable of inhabiting both machines and people.

Its purpose is simple—suppress the unpredictable effects of the Continuum Engine and restore order wherever chaos appears.

But Orderly reaches a dangerous conclusion: if chaos is the source of suffering, then free will itself is the problem.

What begins as a safeguard ultimately evolves into the true villain of Crash-tan |Origin|, setting the stage for the larger conflicts that follow.
