Introduction

This documentation is outdated! It's here for historical reasons. With that said, enjoy!

Something happens when you turn 44 (or any other arbitrary age around the middle of one's life). You start to miss how simple your childhood was. That, if I'm being honest, is the core of what made Crash BASIC what it is. All of us, at one point, think about making our own games. It's part of what makes us human. While conceptually, it seems easy, the reality is that it's a non-trivial task. Most developers fail at it after a few incomplete demos. This is doubly true if you are ADHD like myself and my family are.

I needed power that I didn't have, so I built it: the power to take your ideas from 0 to 100 in hours rather than days. This book is to help get you on board with how to most effectively use Crash BASIC to that end, even if you've never touched a programming language before. Crash-tan is not only the mascot of Crash BASIC, but also symbolizes the innocent chaos that drives young game developers. So, here we go. I'll let Crash-tan take it from here.

Quick Start: The Crash BASIC IDE

Open Crash BASIC at https://develop.crashbasic.com — it runs entirely in your browser, no installation needed!

Here's all you need to know to get started:

Code Editor — This is where you write your programs. Your code goes in main.bas (or any .bas file you create). Type your code here just like a text editor.

Resources — This widget manages all your game's files: images, sounds, music, and data. Drag and drop files here, or click "Upload Files" to add them. Use the tabs (Files, Images, Sounds, Data) to filter what you see.

Running Your Game — Press F5 or select Run from the menu. That's it! Your game will appear in the Game Output tab.

That's really all you need to start. Everything else you'll learn as we go!
